The Illinois Wheat Association Checkoff Committee (IWACC) is working to bring a voluntary wheat checkoff program to our state, and we’re reaching out to encourage your support.
What is the IL Wheat Checkoff Program?
The IL wheat checkoff program is a farmer-funded initiative designed to improve wheat production, develop new markets, and increase demand for wheat products. Farmers contribute a small amount per bushel sold, which is then used to fund research, market development, and promotional activities that benefit the entire wheat industry.
Key Features of the Proposed Illinois Wheat Checkoff Program:
- Voluntary Participation: The program would be completely voluntary and refundable, giving farmers the flexibility to opt out if they choose.
- Modest Investment: The proposed assessment is just 1.5 cents per bushel, comparable to other Midwest wheat checkoff programs.
- Farmer-Led: The board of directors will consist of farmers who understand the needs and challenges of wheat production in Illinois.
- Focus on Research and Education: The primary focus will be on funding research and increasing knowledge about wheat crops to better support our state’s farmers.
- Reinvesting in Our Farmers: The top priority is to invest back into the farming community, strengthening the entire Illinois wheat industry.
